Why do people ..

Refer to the ears as speakers (eg. speaker erundum out ah)?. Ears are input devices while the speakers are output devices.
What's the analogy behind "nandi maadhiri nirkuriye" ?. What I know from my limited knowledge of temples is that the "nandi" is a statue of bull in a 'sitting' position watching over the main shrine. I don't think it blocks the view or that it could be a synonym for statue, if it was, of all the statues in the world why single out nandi ?

I tried hard to stay away from watching this show for two reasons. First, these reality shows bring in more drama then actually any talent. Second, it makes me really really miserable. For seven years I learnt music from a great teacher who tried his best to teach a dumb student like me and here I am wasting it all away. Its been over a year now since I did anything even remotely significant in music (not that I did anything before but at least I was practicing hard). I get extremely jealous and miserable watching these shows.

My mom was(is) addicted to this show and as was coming home early from work for a few months I just couldn’t keep away from it with the TV blaring between 9-10 pm. Strangely, I started liking it. And pretty soon I got extremely addicted and have even gone to extent of blogging about it :). With so many innovative rounds, I thought, for once they had refrained from too much drama and were actually concentrating on the musical talents of the participants.

Things seemed fine until the finals. I can’t believe they actually let the audience decide the winner. It was completely atrocious and it clearly showed all that the channel cared about was keeping its ratings high. It was a great insult to all the hard work put on by those extremely talented singers.

I may sound arrogant but come on! most the people who would have voted would have had no clue about music. All they know of is ‘Suriya songs’, ‘Vijay songs’, ‘Simbu songs’.. etc. Only if the music director is A.R.Rahman they refer to it as Rahman songs. Yuvan, Harris come next but people like Devi Sri Prasad, Vijay Anthony, GV Prakash don’t even exist. You can easily get popular even if you aren’t talented. Its really easy. I have had some personal experiences. I have given extremely sloppy performances and yet have been praised just too much. I am not being humble here. Its really irritating when people praise you even after a sloppy performance. If someone plays a classical piece and if I play a popular film song with some fancy accompaniment, I can easily get popular. Even if its sloppy. It kind of happened to me in school. The college I studied in wasn’t a big one and none of them had even seen a electronic keyboard and again it was easy to get popular.

Ajesh, the winner of super singer 2008 is a wonderful singer. In fact, all of the top five finalists were pretty good singers. I am in no way trying to belittle the dedication, hard work and the musical talents of Ajesh. Unlike me, he really has pretty good talent. I am only p***** off by the way in which the winner was chosen. I damn sure that Ravi would have been the judges choice. He was far far better than others and had given a very consistent performance right from the start. As a young college goer and with such good talent it was only natural that Ajesh was more popular. Its really disappointing that the winner of such a great show was chosen by popularity count rather than by the music legends like Chitra, Sudha Ragunathan and others who were also present at the finals. I would have had no qualms if Ajesh was selected as the winner by the judges themselves.

P.S: This post should have been made a long time ago but as usual I was too lazy to finish it up :). I had started on this post long before the finals when I actually liked this program. Fortunately, procrastination has helped me rethink about it.

I have a broadband connection from the infamous BSNL. Why?, you may ask. First, In my area no other service provider has coverage. Second, compared to others BSNL has some really cheap plans.

I've been having this connection for nearly 1.6 years now and surprisingly the maximum days I have gone without internet is 1-2 days on 2-3 occasions, which I believe is pretty good in BSNL standards. Also, the maximum time they have taken to restore the service back is only around 12 hrs from the time I make a complaint (the catch is it takes 1-2 days just to get them to pick up your call).

Now, for the last two days I was facing the blackout (not surprising as its been quite a while) and after the usual one day of trying I somehow got someone to pick up the call. For around 20mins they made me play around with the TCP/IP setting and the modem configuration and in the end were successfully able to restore the connection back. I was quite surprised by this as I expected the problem to be on their end which is the case usually and then came the shocker.. the person actually said .. "Thank you for calling"
!!!

For those of you who saw my last post, well, I made it through in one piece :D . I was expecting to get the biggest thrashing of my life from my keyboard master. I had planned to meet him and collect my Grade 5 Piano Exam certificate (which I did a year ago and scored badly :( ) at my old apartment where he teaches a kid. I was already expecting a trashing as the certificate had been with him for over a year now and to top it all my parents had also planned on visiting the neighbors on the same day. I was damn sure that my parents would quetch that I haven't even touched the keyboard for a very long time. The meeting between the two seemed inevitable and I was certain that my fate woud be sealed. As expected they did meet and lucliky he was in a hurry as he was getting late for the next class and they didn't talk much :).

This may seem quite trivial but I have the greatest respect for him as a guru and according to him I am a hard working dedicated student (I could be the worst learner). I would do anything to keep this reputation from being damaged.

First, I am happy than A.R.Rahman has won the Golden Globe award. Was waiting for him to get some international recognition which he rightly deserves. I happened to listen to the soundtrack of the movie only today and I must say I wasn't really impressed. Also, I haven't seen the movie yet and from what I hear about the storyline it doesn't seem impressive too. Certainly, Lagaan and Rang De Basanti were far better films and ought to have got him international recognition (I donno much about the Golden Globe awards. Should the movie be in English for it to be nominated ?). Nevertheless, it would have been really a unique movie experience for the white people which I believe is what has led to all this hype.

One of my favorite bloggers, hawkeye , says it all well here.

Anyway I do hope A.R.Rahman goes on to win an Oscar, but I certainly would have been more happy if it had happened for Lagaan.

You can't blame me entirely. I accept that I was lazy, but I was also a victim of a conspiracy. First, I have been exiled to the outskirts of chennai. Two, I am wasting more than four hours daily traveling to-and-fro from work. Three, this really annoying BSNL took nearly two months to give me a broadband connection (Airtel didn't have network in my area :( ). Now that things have finally started to show signs of settling down I thought I'll resume blogging again.

After being exiled I was without Internet for almost three months. During this long solitary confinement I realized a few things.

I had some kind of phobia when it came to browsing at Cyber Cafes. Long time ago I read in a newspaper about how a wiz-kid went about installing key loggers in cyber cafes and then stole personal information from the logs that had everything from passwords to bank account details. This story always creeps into my mind whenever I think of going to a cyber cafe.
Without Internet(or Google, to be precise) I am the biggest idiot in the world.
I got a brand new PC but didn't even feel like touching it.
I am greatly inspired by movies, A.R.Rahman, Ilayaraja, Yuvan Shankar Raja and of course, Google. Not being able to keep track of what was happening to them made my brain completely inane.

So how did I manage to stay alive?

I was somehow managing with the GPRS on my Nokia 6020.. chatting, checking mails, reading blogs (yup, I was reading your blogs) and even sent some money through paypal!. Man! I still can't believe I did all those things with a Nokia 6020. Long live Opera Mini, Reporo and flurry.

I was really worried that I had hit yet another writer's block. With the world cup going on and Team India starting their campaign against Bangladesh I have been assured of enough tidings to keep myself occupied for an entire lifetime.

I bet Team India is the luckiest team in the whole world or how else would you justify Pakistan losing to a minnow among minnows on the same day? Pakistan's loss to Ireland would have certainly obnubilated India's loss but thanks to our sensational media, its been elucidated. Times Now, NDTV, CNN-IBN ... are having a field day constantly airing clips of shewag's dismissal , the pitiable score and snippets from the post match press meet.

Many people are saying that India lost the game because they choose to bat first. Oh! come on guys.. its against Bangladesh we are playing.. it doesn't matter if we bat or bowl first!. And for all those who are saying that Bangladesh has progressed into a formidable team and that we lost to a better team.. just wait till the Sri Lankans trash them out.

PS1: I wanted to do more bashing but the news of the death of Pak. cricket coach Bob woolmer has really dampened my spirits.

A lot of people, almost everybody, including my parents assume (or have assumed) a lot things about me which I am not.

I was once (and fortunately still) assumed by a few to be a programming genius.
Those who doubted my programming skills quickly assumed me to be a musical wizard .
Even though I can barely sing, my mom has assumed that I have a good voice.
My college friends think that I have a perfectly laid out plan for my future. I am clueless on what to do after getting up in the morning everyday.
Just because I don't talk much people think I have a conceit personality.
Just because I don't talk much people think I am a man of action ;)).
My parents and even some of my relatives think that I could do well if I took up animation.

Well, that's all I can think of for now but I assume there could be more.

How did people come to these assumptions?

I used to do a lot of c++ programming when I was in my 11th and 12th grade and for some time in the first year of college.
I just know to play the keyboard and I can compose a little bit. Have had some formal training in western classical music and playing the piano.
I sometimes practice singing when I am alone.
As I don't do 'things' that are considered to be 'normal' for college boys I have been termed intelligent and according to them an intelligent guy always leads a well planned life.

I play a hell a lot of computer games, love cartoons, animax etc etc.

I certainly don't deny that I have interest in music or programming. What's my problem then? I am an extremely lazy guy. I strongly believe that high expectations would result in me having to put extra effort :( .

Is being too good, good?

I have always wondered how much good is good?

Lets assume that I start a software company today. Lets assume that it goes on become the biggest company in the world in about a year(ok! its too much but lets assume..). Lets also assume that Bill Gates overwhelmed by my company's success writes microsoft to me and also all of his fortunes. Now I would probably be the richest man in the world. I now start pursing my other dream and go on to become a music director. I don't just become another music director but really a great one beating IR, ARR...(hey! hey! just assume..) in a year. Now the top 10 richest people in the world are overwhelmed by music and they also write their fortunes to me. I am now the richest man beyond anyones wildest imagination. I have all the money and time( its been only two years) in the world. So what do I do now? I start by composing for free and I still deliver excellent compositions. I don't just stop there. Next I start offering all the products that my company does for free( my company does all possible software products in the world). What will happen now? Obviously all IT companies in the world will start to close down. Recording companies will close down. Other music directors wont be needed anymore.

If its music then its only by me.
If its software then its only by me.

and its free!!!.

I was just trying to do a service to society here. I never intended to become a monopoly. Will I now be considered evil for trying to be too good?

Well, What I have said is highly exaggerated but something like this is not impossible. Best example would be Google and A.R.Rahman.

Google has reached( or is reaching) a point close to being a monopoly on the world wide web. Anyone who uses the www has to somehow use google. It has taken over the blogospher, mail, social networking.... I expect more to come in the future. The biggest source of revenue on the www is probably only through advertisers and its only a matter of time before it becomes

If its advertising, its only on Google.

A.R.Rahman's success as a music director is phenomenal. Just look at the fans in orkut or yahoo groups. Most people I have seen don't like an album just because its not by ARR. If you don't compose like ARR they don't like you and if you do compose like him they say you are copying him. How many of you heard people say " Hey you need to listen at least 4 to 5 times before you start liking a song by ARR"?. Its very much true. But its also true for many others.
So as long as ARR is there it will be...

If its music, it has to be by A.R.Rahman.

...well, at least in India.
